Anyone Survived Stage Four Lung Cancer?
Hi I was wondering if anyone has survived stage four lung cancer. My bf's mom is diagnosed with stage four (I think non-small cell lung) cancer. I would like to know if anyone out there has been through the same situation or know who someone who have survived it. please let me know…thanks in advance
There are some incredible drugs now being used by oncologists – Sudent, Nexavar, among a couple others. Results are good for prolonging life – keyword, prolonging not curing cancer.
I have to echo the cancer doc above. In my 20 years of experience as a cancer specialist doctor, I did not see or know of a patient with metastatic non-small cell carcinoma of the lung who was actually cured or even survived five years, but that does not mean it is impossible. it just means that the doc above and myself have not seen a good outcome and that a long term survival is rare.
Still, it is important to be realistic yet not remove all hope when presenting "statistics" to patients. each person is special. No one knows the future with certainty. we can only speak in "likely" or "usual" outcomes and pray for a miracle here and there. I have seen a few unexplained reversals of serious malignancies, but none of these were lung cancer patients.
I'm sorry to tell you but this is a bad situation, and there is only a 1 in 50 chance she will be alive in 5 years time.
The chance she will survive in 1 year is 15-35%.
Don't blurt this out to your boyfriend but it's important to remain strong and supportive through this difficult time, for both of them.
Hi My mom has stage 4 small cell lung cancer. She was told in June of last year . She is hanging on and doing well. they dont want to say "remission " but she is cancer free at this stage and the Dr.s are surprised as she had a 15% chance. They have said if she had the other type of lung cancer cancer she would have a 80% change for a 5-7 year survival right now we wait and enjoy the time we have with mom
